What Gun Parts Can be Shipped: Answered
Posted by Doug Shoemaker on Sep 13th 2022
Technically all gun parts can be shipped. However, not all gun parts can be sent directly to the purchaser. Some must go through an FFL. Keep reading to learn more about how certain parts can be shipped.
Before you continue reading, this article does not consider individual State laws.
Gun Parts Shipped Direct
If you are only planning on purchasing parts for firearms, then all parts except serialized firearms (for example, receivers and frames) can be shipped directly to your door. No federal regulations surround the parts themselves.
Most retailers that sell firearms parts stay on top of which shipping companies respect firearms laws and choose to use those companies. So you can rest easy that you will receive your parts intact.

Gun Parts Shipped to an FFL
If you are planning on buying serialized firearms, then you will need to choose an FFL for them to be sent to. The seller will then ship the serialized item to your chosen FFL so you can complete the necessary paperwork and pick up your item(s).
This does take a little longer than most parts; however, federal laws come into play with these types of parts.

Advice for Shipping Gun Parts
Taking precautions when boxing firearms parts is essential to ensure your precious packages arrive in one piece. And by all means, insure packages for total value — even if your packaging is perfect, it's always possible for your shipment to be lost. Sadly, that can happen, no matter which carrier you choose: FedEx, UPS, or the U.S. Postal Service (USPS).
Double-pack the contents and if you can, try double-boxing. Spend the money on heavy-reinforced shipping tape. If the contents are loosely packed, the package will get crushed. On important or delicate items, wrap the content in plastic and spray the inside void areas with non-expanding foam. They make shipping foam just for this.
Will UPS Destroy Gun Parts?
Recently some alarming news was released that Ghost Firearms and Brownells each received a letter from UPS stating that they would destroy any parts they attempted to ship. However, this was a unique case for them; as far as we know, other firearms companies have not received similar letters. We disagree with the stance UPS chose to take here, but at this time, it does not affect other dealers or manufacturers. Most likely, this comes down to UPS being ignorant of what Ghost does and how federal shipping laws apply to their business.
It is unlikely that individuals will be affected by what UPS has done to these companies; however, we also support you not using them for this reason if you choose.
